  1. Any alloy of mercury with other metals. Most
  2. metals will form amalgams, except iron and
  3. platinum. Amalgam is used in dentistry for
  4. filling teeth, and usually contains copper,
  5. silver, and zinc as the main alloying
  6. ingredients. This amalgam is pliable when
  7. first mixed and then sets hard, but the
  8. mercury leaches out and causes a type of
  9. heavy-metal poisoning. Amalgamation, the
  10. process of forming an amalgam, is a technique
  11. sometimes used to extract gold and silver
  12. from their ores. The ores are treated with
  13. mercury, which combines with the precious
  14. metals.
